Soul Navigation Card of the Week: STRUCTURE

Structure Card

Definition: morphology, form; the organization of something; the manner of construction of something and the management of its parts.

Without structure there would be no form. Structure provides a framework within which life arranges itself. Our skeleton provides the basic structure around which our bodies are formed, without which we would fall into a heap. Similarly, organizations, language and society all depend on structural elements that provide a framework or form from which their elements arise.

Structure is a principle that organizes life and allows things to take shape.  Our individual lives are usually structured around meaning, value and beliefs.  They provide the impetus for our choices, which determine our daily routine or structure.

In our daily lives, it is helpful if structural elements upon which we depend are flexible enough to adapt to life’s many changes. Excessive rigidity in structures keeps one locked into a way of being that hampers one’s growth – this is true on both the individual and collective level. On the other hand, excessive flexibility or fluidity in structure leads to a dissipation of energy and often elements do not take shape and fully actualize.

When you pull this card, you may want to examine the structures in your own life – both internally and externally. External structures can include organizational or societal elements that can be overbearing or restricting on one hand or, essentially non-existent and lacking on the other. Internal structures are beliefs and assumptions through which we perceive the world and see ourselves.  Are you working under old frameworks?  Perhaps you are lacking a framework and way of containing the energy you are bringing into your life.

Do you need more structure in your life, or has it become too rigid?  Do you need to reorganize the current structures in your life?  Is attachment to your routine and structure your sense of security?  In what ways is your structure helping you? In what ways is it hindering you?

Soul Navigation Card of the Week: DIRECTION

Direction Card

Definition: the act of setting and holding a course; the concentration of attention or energy on something; the spatial relation between something; a general course along which something has a tendency to develop; something that provides advice as to a decision or course of action; a message describing how something is to be done.

Direction moves us towards our intentions, goals, or life vision, providing a sense of purpose and meaning in our lives and in our day-to-day activities.  A sense of direction guides our choices, movement, and the paths we take, moving us forward towards our goal, and unfolding Self.

Sometimes our direction is clear and focused, choices are obvious and there is a strong sense of progression towards our goals.  At other times our direction may seem unclear, guided by a sense of what we do not want or by what feels good in the moment. When we are guided by an inner knowing that is congruent with our soul – or deeper sense of self – direction may still not be clear, however a resounding “YES” in your whole being affirms the correctness of your path.

When you get this card it may be time to review the direction you are taking in your various life paths. Perhaps you need to concentrate your energies on what you are wanting to achieve, or on becoming more aligned with your goals or life vision. Recalling our direction reaffirms meaning and purpose in our activities and can reinvigorate our motivation.

Do you need to clarify your direction?  Are you moving aimlessly? Or, is your direction in line with your life vision, or with your soul’s path? Are your current direction and vision in conflict? Are the choices you make directing you towards your deepest goals?  Do you feel that you know what you want but not how to get there?

Soul Navigation Card of the Week: OBSTACLES

Obstacles Card

Definition:  a person or thing that opposes, hinders, or holds up progress; something immaterial that stands in the way and must be circumvented or surmounted.

When you pull this card there may be something blocking your desired goals, destination or achievements.  Obstacles are an impediment of your natural progression, and as with most things, obstacles may originate from within, without, or from an interplay of the two.

Externally, obstacles can originate from a multitude of things: weather, traffic, mail delivery problems, unexpected delays, etc.  Internally, obstacles may be attitudes, outdated belief systems, or ineffective approaches towards your goal that may be blocking you.

Obstacles may become stronger through our resistance to them.  It is thus helpful to explore the nature of the obstacles we are encountering. Though obstacles may be frustrating at their onset, they may have a beneficial value in the long term.  For example, a delay may cause us to revise plans in a way that ultimately brings improvement; the obstacles can make us stronger, and more appreciative of what we have gained.  Obstacles may often lead to opportunity, lessons or benefits.  Sometimes they are felt as large insurmountable boulders on our path.  At other times, they are like fog, easily burned through by the light of the sun.

What is the purpose of any obstacles you may be facing?  What are you learning through these obstacles? What happens when you accept the nature of the obstacle?  Is your will in alignment with your spirit?  Are there inner obstacles, beliefs, or other hindrances that are obstructing you?

Soul Navigation Card of the Week: RELATIONSHIPS

Relationships Card

Definition: a relation between people; a state involving mutual dealings between people or parties or countries; a state of connectedness between people; relatedness or connection by blood or marriage or adoption; family relationship.

Relationships are of paramount importance in our life, from our primary relationships in early childhood that lay the groundwork for other interactions, to our sibling relationships, friendships, and deeper intimate ones. Relationships are fundamental to our learning, our growth, and connectedness in the world.  We are after all social animals despite the occasional recluse, and occasional retreats from socializing.

When in relationship our interactions become as a dance that is ever changing in rhythm. This dance can be sometimes graceful and smooth, boring and uninteresting, full of tension, and other times seemingly unskilled.  How do we meet each change in tempo?  Do we blame the other for their lack of skill, do we try and work on our rhythm as a team, or on our own, do we keep changing partners hoping to find the best dancer, or do we give up on dancing all together.

In relationships we can be deeply seen, met, and accepted just as we are. Relationships are where we learn to love more deeply, loving and accepting ourselves, and the other person.  Dropping our agendas, our hurts, and expectations we become vulnerable, we allow ourselves to be seen, we allow ourselves to see the other.

It is easy to forget the importance of relationships, especially when other commitments get in the way or when the dance is not the way we wanted it to be.  All relationships are important from life partners, intimate friends, light-hearted friendships, acquaintances, and people we meet in our day-to-day comings and goings.  The most important relationship is the relationship we have with our self, for this relationship informs all other relationships.

If this card has come up you may want to examine the nature of your relationships. Is it time to pay more attention to your relationships? Have you lost yourself in your relationship?  Do you need to re-examine your relationship? Are you opening your heart in relationship?  Do you feel seen, and are you seeing the other?  What is your relationship like with yourself?

Soul Navigation Card of the Week: GRATITUDE

Gratitude Card

Definition: A feeling of thankfulness and appreciation; the state of being grateful; warm and friendly feeling toward a benefactor; kindness awakened by a favor received.

“Gratitude is the mother of all virtues.”

-Marcus Cicero

When we are grateful, we experience a feeling akin to love. Our heart opens up in appreciation to that which we are grateful for, and we may experience an expansiveness throughout our whole being.

Gratitude is one of the most important feelings to cultivate in our lives.  Cultivation of gratitude involves noticing and appreciating that which we so often overlook - from a blade of grass, or a roof over our heads, to a supportive loved one. Finding gratitude towards life’s challenges - though difficult - greatly reduces stress and depression, and increases overall resiliency to future challenges. Perspectives change more easily and appreciating abundance in the moment becomes more evident.

Gratitude, in its pure essence, without attachment or dependency, opens the heart and one’s feeling of connectedness to people and the world around us. Feelings of isolation and separateness decrease. When we are grateful for both the mundane and the significant, painful things in our lives, we become open to the subtler ways in which we are deeply connected to all life. The synchronicity and magic of every moment becomes poignant and charged with appreciation, creating a ripple effect in the world around us. Gratitude exercises the heart of your soul. With an open and loving heart, all things are possible.

If you have chosen this card, explore the meaning of gratitude for you. Do you need more gratitude in your life, or is this a confirmation of your growing appreciation that now exists? How often you express your gratitude? Do you need to increase your expression of gratitude? What are you grateful for? How can you find gratitude even during life’s challenges?
